What makes CELTA better than other EFL programs?
Developed in the UK in the 1970s, the CELTA program is the introductory certification that is the most honoured, entry-level credential in the world for teaching English as a second or foreign language; in fact, it is the qualification that many language school employers ask for by name. Admission is selective; applicants must submit and pass a pre-course assignment and be interviewed by one of our CELTA tutors. Cambridge ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) approves all centres, courses, and tutors worldwide.
Do I need to have a university degree in order to take CELTA?
No, although you do need to have a standard of education that would allow entry to higher education in your own country.
Do I have to be a native English speaker in order to take CELTA?
No, although you must have an awareness of spoken language and competence in English, both written and spoken, that will enable you to follow the course.
How much time will I need to devote to the course each day?
The 4-week CELTA course is inevitably very intensive. There is a 100% attendance requirement, you will need most evenings and weekends for homework tasks, written assignments and lesson planning, and materials preparation. The course is demanding and challenging, but most trainees enjoy and thrive on the work.
Does the course include any teaching practice?
Yes. Scheduled teaching practice will take place every afternoon. The course is a 130-hour course designed by the University of Cambridge to provide a sound basis in the principles and techniques of effective teaching of English to adult learners. The course includes teaching practice, six hours of which is observed and assessed by approved course tutors, a minimum of six hours of observation of experienced teachers in the classroom, and completion of a range of written assignments covering learner needs analysis, the evaluation of teaching and learning resources, language analysis and effective self-evaluation.
You will be teaching volunteer students —all adults—and you will teach at two distinct levels over the four weeks.
Is there an exam at the end of the course?
No, there is no written or practical examination at the end of the course. Assessment will be made on a continuous basis, and this assessment will cover three main areas:
Teaching practice
Written assignments
and
Professional development
Plenty of guidance and help will be given as far as assessment is concerned. You will have one-on-one tutorials with your tutor, where you can discuss your progress and identify areas to work on.
Who teaches the CELTA course?
All CELTA tutors have the advanced Cambridge Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults (DELTA), a sound background of theoretical knowledge, and years of practical classroom experience with unilingual and multilingual groups at all levels. Cambridge ESOL follows strict standards for approving CELTA tutors. Their qualifications ensure that CELTA courses incorporate a wide range of TEFL principles and practical classroom techniques.
